Introduction to Adults Social Care
Adults Social Care services provide support for older people, people with mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, those with alcohol and substance misuse problems, the homeless, prevention of abuse or neglect, domestic abuse and associated support for families and carers.
Social Care Assessments
If you or someone you know has difficulty coping with daily life, you may consider seeking support from your Local Authority. They have a duty to assess anyone who appears to need the community care services they provide.
The assessment is important to work out what your difficulties are and to provide the best possible service to you. You should be involved in the decision-making process and, if appropriate, a care plan may be created for you.
Services provided can include:
- information, advice and advocacy
- short term support for up to six weeks (also known as reablement)
- support for carers
- access to healthcare services
- provision of equipment and adaptations
- help to let you live in your home
- community support and activities
- a direct payment to pay for your services
- financial support to maximise your benefits
- independent financial advice
Often, it is assistance, such as help with washing, nutrition, being dressed, getting out and about; that makes a big difference to people's lives.
